One of the biggest differences between a reptile and an amphibian is that amphibians spend part of their life cycle dependent on water. Once they hatch out of eggs, the first life cycle of amphibians is spent in water because they have gills. Like a tadpole. Then they begin to develop lungs which allows them to move onto land. Reptiles, on the other hand, do not have that life stage where they are dependent on water. Reptiles are born with fully functioning lungs.
